The Nanoman is a multimedia outreach program that interfaces STEM disciplines with the performing arts. The Nanoman is a co-production by retro-forward musical writing team Knight&Brinegar and The Steinmetz Lab of Biomolecular Science and Technology. The Nanoman's mission is to disseminate recent scientific advances in cancer nanotechnology to the general public and K-12 students. To pique interest, our program combines science with live musical theater, animated video, and gaming. Aggressive, metastatic cancer is often treated using chemotherapeutics; these drugs are highly toxic and not targeted to the cancer cells, which means that patients suffer from the treatment. Nanotechnology – the science and engineering of objects at the nanometer-scale – can change this. Drugs can be loaded inside a nanocarrier and the outside of the carrier is programmed to specifically target the cancerous tissue!
